Chattanooga Town Committee, 2017-2018
Mary Helms, Chairman
Our first meeting was held at the Mountain City Club on Thursday, September 14 at 11:00 am. It was a brainstorming session to discuss what we would like for our Chattanooga Town Committee to offer our members and the public. With more and more members, especially the younger ones, in the work force, we looked into formats other than our noon lunch meetings. This was an exciting luncheon meeting.
The Thursday, October 12, 11:00 am meeting was a tour of the Songbirds Guitar Museum at the Chattanooga Choo Choo followed by lunch at the nearby Stir Restaurant. The Songbirds Museum has one of the largest collections of guitars in the world.
On November 8 and 9 we were honored with the Tennessee Board of Managers Visitation. The evening of November 8 there was a lovely cocktail party at the home of Sarah Fowler on Lookout Mountain, followed by dinner at the Fairyland Club. The next day the luncheon meeting was held at 11:00 am at the Lookout Mountain Golf Club. Local attorney and historian Maury Nicely gave a very entertaining and informative talk on Chattanooga history.
In February Chattanooga Dames volunteered at the Houston Museum Antiques Show, which was held at Stratton Hall. Dames Marilyn Hoke and Jane Lupton are Trustees at the Houston Museum of Decorative Arts, and the Chattanooga Town Committee supports the Houston as one of our projects.
On Friday, March 2, at 6:00 pm forty-three Chattanooga Dames, husbands and friends gathered at the Heritage Landing Club House for a festive evening. We first enjoyed wine and hors d’oeuvres brought by our members and then a fascinating talk by Dr. Michael D. Thompson of the UTC History Department. Dr. Thompson talked on the origins of slavery in the Thirteen Colonies and showed many wonderful original graphics from historic sources.
The McCoy Farm and Gardens in Walden was the setting for our Thursday, March 8, 11:00 am meeting. McCoy House Board Members Linda Collins and Mickey Robbins gave a talk on future plans for the property. Lunch was from Southern Star. Our Dames plan to become active in supporting the McCoy Farm and Gardens.
Our final meeting will be on Thursday, May 10, 11:00 am at the Chattanooga Golf and Country Club. Karen Stone will speak on “Preserving Your Mementos and Records.”
